Honeywell Pioneering Sustainable Aviation Fuel Technology

 

Honeywell has introduced a pioneering technology for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with low carbon emissions. The future of SAFs presents a promising opportunity to diminish aviation's carbon footprint by utilizing renewable feedstocks and advanced production methods, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and promoting a more sustainable aviation industry.


Honeywell has unveiled its innovative UOP eFining technology, a groundbreaking solution for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with low carbon emissions. The methanol to jet fuel (MTJ) process efficiently converts eMethanol to eSAF at scale, offering high-yield production at a lower cost compared to similar technologies. This technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 88% compared to traditional jet fuel, making it an eco-friendly drop-in replacement fuel that requires no aircraft or infrastructure modifications.

 

HIF Global and Honeywell Partner for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Technology

HIF Global, the world's leading eFuels company, plans to utilize this new technology in its second U.S. eFuels facility for the production of eSAF. The HIF eSAF project aims to become the world's largest eSAF facility, recycling around 2 million tons of captured CO2 to generate approximately 11,000 barrels per day of eSAF by 2030. eFuels, also known as electrofuels, are synthetic fuels derived from a combination of green hydrogen and carbon dioxide, offering sustainable alternatives to conventional fossil fuels. The process involves converting eMethanol, derived from green hydrogen and CO2, into a variety of sustainable fuels such as eSAF, eGasoline, and eDiesel.

The introduction of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable aviation industry. As concerns about climate change and environmental impact continue to grow, the aviation sector is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. SAF offers a promising solution by providing an alternative to traditional fossil fuels, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a more sustainable future.


The future of sustainability in the aviation industry hinges on the widespread adoption of SAF. Governments and regulatory bodies around the world are recognizing the importance of transitioning to sustainable fuels. Initiatives such as the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge in the United States and the ReFuelEU Aviation rules in Europe demonstrate a commitment to driving the production and use of SAF on a large scale.

Collaboration and investment in sustainable aviation fuel production and infrastructure will be critical in realizing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation industry. The demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is on the rise. In 2021, the U.S. Government initiated the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge, targeting a production of three billion gallons of SAF annually by 2030 and a 20% reduction in aviation emissions, with a long-term objective of meeting 100% of the country's aviation fuel demand with SAF by 2050. Similarly, the European Council introduced the ReFuelEU Aviation rules, part of the 'Fit for 55' package, which aims to increase the share of sustainable fuels at EU airports from a minimum of 2% in 2025 to 70% by 2050. Additionally, there is a subtarget for eSAF, aiming for 1.2% by 2030 and 35% by 2050. To meet this growing demand for SAF, various incentives such as the Inflation Reduction Act are in place, supporting the commercialization of technologies like Honeywell UOP eFining.
